This one pretty much applies to every walk in life, to every avenue throughout your journey, but that doesn’t make it any less relevant or any less applicable to writing for that matter.
The fact of the matter is, different is always the aim. Uniqueness, I feel, is always better than just being a sheep and following the herd that is led by the shepherd of mainstream popularity and the opinions of other sheep. Break free from the herd I say! Why will you care what they say about you when you’re too far away to hear? Too far along the road to finding yourself (so much so that your feet are actually starting to ache) to give a fuck. The simple answer is: you won’t. And the simple reason for this is: you will have found success through daring to be different.
You may find yourself on the same general path as people, you may find that you’re even walking side-by-side in the exact same direction. But remember, and take this in because this is the important part: that does not mean you are the same as them. You can have the same goals, the same ambitions; even the same dreams as someone – but it is how you go about achieving those very things that defines who you are. It is about how much you are willing to give to those things that differentiates you from the rest of the herd.
It’s the same in writing. We’re all on the same path, we’re all craving having our names on the front of a published book and knowing that all of our hard work was worth it as we hold it up towards the sky and scream out in a manic war cry. We’re all moving in the same direction but our modes of transport are different. They must be different.
You aren’t going to become as renowned a writer as Stephen King by imitating or trying to be Stephen King. That’s the whole point here – the world of literature already has a Stephen King and his name is Stephen fucking King. Well, that’s not his middle name but you catch my drift…
You may love his writing (I sure as heck do) and you might read some sentences, paragraphs, pages or even whole books and think ‘Damn, I wish that I had written that’ (I’ve done that too, trust me) but that doesn’t mean that you should try to write that. That is his unique tone, voice and style – no one can mimic it. No one can write like he does because his writing is so unique. Which is the exact reason you should do the same. The exact reason as to why you should strive for uniqueness. It may seem a little scary at first, but trust me, it’ll be worth it in the long run.
And speaking of the long run, I best be off to sleep. I can hear that early morning jog calling my name. I’m only joking, I don’t run… Or even jog for that matter… But what I do do (haha, do do) is write, and uniquely too.
And writing uniquely, that certainly makes for some:
