Have you ever sat down with every intention to write, only to find that your head is filled with sand? If so, you should probably go see a doctor about that… We have heard that sand isn’t the best thing to have coming out of your ears.

On a serious note, though, there’s nothing worse than struggling to write. You feel good; you’re excited about it, but when it comes time to produce the words, you come up with nothing. It feels as though you’ve forgotten everything you’ve learned thus far, and probably also say something along the lines of, “What are words?”

The answer to this problem, although simple in theory, can actually prove to be quite difficult. What is the answer? Well, it’s a mixture of two things… mental clarity, and what you do to achieve it.

Pure Bliss

You know those days where you sit down and find words pouring out of you at ridiculous speeds? Aren’t those days just the best? They make you feel so free; so alive. And they’re the days that every writer dreams of.

You see, the best writing is done when your mind is clear.

In those circumstances, you’re free to write as your truest self, and outside influences are few to none. That’s the beauty of a clear mind. It is the best mental state to create in. Just think about it… If that voice in your head is shouting too loud, how can you possibly hear your heart’s creative thoughts?

Clear That Mind

We have a simple tactic for you to try.

Next time you’re planning out your writing time, allocate three different times of the day in which you’re going to write (if you get that privilege). So, for example, on Monday write in the morning, Tuesday write midday, and on Wednesday write at night. Mix it up like this for a few weeks, and make sure you keep track of your word counts and the quality of your writing on each day.

After about a month, assess the data, and try to produce some results. Did you write more in the morning but better at night? Or was it something different? Look for patterns, and try to decide what those patterns mean. Maybe you can use this information to change up your writing routine, and mould it to a schedule that fits.

We also have a little mind-clearing drill for you to try.

Before you write, give yourself half an hour to prepare. For the first ten minutes, read a little of the book you’re currently reading. Don’t think of it as reading though, and don’t focus on the writing-based specifics. Just get lost in the story’s magic.

After that, you’re going to meditate.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve meditated before or not – it’s super easy. You see, meditation doesn’t have to be some all-knowing process in which you discover the meaning of life. Nope. It can be something as simple as setting aside ten minutes to focus specifically on focussing on nothing. You literally just sit. You breathe and you breathe and you keep thinking of nothing. Get an app if you need to, there are some great ones out there.

After you’ve cleared that messy mind of yours, dive right into your current project. Don’t hesitate; don’t plot or outline. Just jump in and write – it’s the only way.

Seek And You Shall Find

If you want to clear your mind, it’s you who has to do the clearing… it doesn’t just magically happen.
