…The writers get writing.

class, close-up, diary

When was the last time you complained about having to write? When was the last time you sat down before the blank page and dreaded the process of putting words onto it? When was the last time you thought about how simple this actually is?

You’re right. There are going to be difficult times… but you must realise something very simple: you signed up for this. It wasn’t because you wanted to be rich or famous, or because you wanted to be on some pedestal above the rest of society. No.

You signed up for this life because without it – without the act of putting words onto a blank page – you see no value in existing. This is your purpose. You do this because you love it. And guess what? It’s always best to keep it that way.

Fall In Love With Writing (Again)

Sometimes you just need to step back; see things from a different angle so you’re able to put them into perspective. So writing is hard…? You want to know what our response to that is?

Good. It’s supposed to be hard.

If it wasn’t hard, where would the reward be? Anyone with the ability to understand the alphabet would be a bestselling author; the world would be full of writers. Why do you think that’s not currently the case? Because writing is hard, and that’s the way it’s meant to be. So next time you start to struggle, don’t beat yourself up or dwell on the negative aspects, just push on and pat yourself on the back. You’re doing great.

Take It Back To The Basics

Forget about book deals and agents and editors and publishing – none of that stuff was important when you wrote your first ever story, and it’s not important now. What’s important is rekindling that literary flame. And the only way you’re going to do that is by taking things down a notch.

Forget about the professional aspects of writing and the literary world, and instead just focus on the actual art of it. Pick up your pen, grab some paper, and begin scrawling. No planning; no notes; no submission plans. Just let your brain loose and focus on nothing but the fluency of the words you’re stringing together.

Find that flow and feeling that you love so much, and use it to write and to keep on writing. You know how it feels. There’s nothing more freeing than writing because your heart demands that you do.

Let these energies fill you, and use them to channel your deepest self-belief.

That’s what it’s all about.

It doesn’t matter how hard writing gets. So long as your mind is appropriately aligned, you will push forward to grow and achieve. Stagnation is so dangerous… So please, don’t succumb to it. Instead, when things get tough, just zone out and power on. There’s no better feeling than looking down at your hugely improved word count and giving your self-doubt the middle finger.

You can do this. You know why? Because you’re a writer. It’s what you do.
