Don’t Find Time, Make It: Two Ways to Leave Your Excuses at the Door

The majority of today’s society don’t actually realise that we currently live in the greatest era ever in terms of starting a business. There has never been a better time to start building your own empire than right now, and that’s a fact.

What with the booming uprise of social media, blogs and podcasts, putting out content has never been so easy, and thus, building a following has never been so easy. One of the most crucial things in building a brand or a business is finding a group of people to sell your product/service to, and now, with the power of social media, we can do all that for free. Of course, the process can be sped up through paid ads etc, but the basics are all free – they’re more than enough.

Here comes the astounding part.

Even with all this, even with the endless sea of opportunity before them, people still come up with lousy excuses. They come up with all sorts of bullshit. They’ll tell you they can’t put in work because they don’t know how, or because they had a rough childhood, or because they buy into this belief that all successful people were born into success – the list is probably endless.

Out of all the excuses they come up with, one usually comes up way more often.

“I don’t have the time for that.”

This. This excuse astounds me beyond measures that words can convey. And considering words are my specialty, that really is saying something. It’s not a case of not having time, it’s a case of not having your priorities in check. These people who ‘don’t have time’, are the same people who spend their Saturdays day-drinking with their buddies and their Sundays lounging around in bed all damn day.

You do have time, you just don’t have the work ethic.

Realise How Long a Day Actually Is

If you’re one of these people who claim to have no time to work on their goals, this one is for you. With this quick analysis, you shall see exactly why the phrase ‘I don’t have time’ sounds so ridiculous.

It sounds ridiculous because you do have time, it’s as simple as that.

When you wake up in the morning, you have between sixteen and eighteen hours until it’s time to go to sleep again. This is based on the average person’s sleeping times, you may have more or less, but this is just an outline.

So let’s say you get up at seven in the morning and get to work for eight – there’s an hour gone. By the time you’ve worked your shift and made your way back home, let’s call it four p.m. – that’s nine hours gone. So you get home and spend an hour or two with your family, you have some food, you chill for a little. It’s now six p.m. – this is the most crucial time of the day. You still have six or seven hours left, and it’s what you do with these hours that really means the difference between winning and your losing.

If you’re someone who watches Netflix from six until bed time, then you have time to work. If you like to grab some drinks with your friends, you still have time to work. If you like to take a stroll to clear your mind, you still have time to work.

The bottom line is, if at six p.m. you have finished your day job and have spent a little time with your family, then you still have six hours left over in which you can knuckle down and work on your personal projects. Whether or not you choose to do so is a different ballgame, but if you keep doing pointless shit in your spare time, that’s on you.

If you are one of those people who spend their evenings ‘unwinding’, do me a favour, would you? Enjoy it. By all means. Hell go wild with it. But don’t come up with excuses about not having time when you blatantly do.

It’s not that you don’t have time, you just don’t have the right mindset. And luckily for you, the mind is an adaptable part of the human anatomy.

Lose and Learn to Love It

I’m no psychologist, but in my opinion, an excuse in its most basic form, is a way for a person to avoid taking the heat for their loss. People hate to lose, it’s human nature, but to change your mindset and to change your game forever, you’ve got to learn to embrace losing. You’ve got to learn to love it.

Not only does learning to love losing prevent you from ever actually losing, but it also stops you from coming up with excuses for your loss. So long as you learn, you never really lost in the first place. And if you love that feeling of falling down and rising back to your feet as a stronger person, then there’s no way you can come up with any excuses as to why you lost. Or, alternatively, any premeditated excuses as to why you’ll never be able to win.

Taking a loss like a man (or woman) is a huge part of making it in the world of business. It’s very rare that you’ll walk into the market as a startup and sky-rocket to seven figures right off the bat. Chances are, you’re going to have to face losing at some point. But it’s how you react to that loss that really defines it as a loss.

For me, it’s only ever a loss if you give up after it. Until that moment, there are no losses and no losing; there are only lessons.

So if you can turn your mindset around (which you can) and teach yourself to love losing, you’ll discover the most backwards superpower in this whole freaking game. Without the fear of losing before a loss, and without the humiliation that comes after a loss, excuses cease to exist. The day you learn to love losing is the day you bury your excuses once and for all.

Excuses Are Pointless

When it comes down to it, excuses really are pointless. They don’t grow you as a person, and they definitely don’t grow you as a business owner, so therefore, they have no place on this earth.

Next time you feel the need to come up with an excuse, think back to this article and the points I have covered in it. Think about what an excuse will get you. Think about it right now in fact. What will an excuse get you?

Nowhere. That’s the answer I’m looking for.

Excuses will get you nowhere.
